The Role of HR in Promoting Work-Life Balance

Introduction

Work-life balance is the ability to manage relationships, work, and leisure to live a happy, healthy, and productive life. It means setting aside time for personal growth, well-being, and activities that fit with your values and interests. (Kofodimos)

Work-life balance plays an important role in employees' well-being and productivity in Sri Lanka. Given changes in the workplace, the economy, and society, human resources plays a critical role in helping employees find a balance between their personal and professional lives. By creating programs and policies that help this balance, HR can increase employee enthusiasm and engagement in Sri Lankan companies.

1. Work flexibility

HR departments in Sri Lanka are introducing flexible work practices, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the businesses below allow their employees to work from home on certain days. The practice reduces the stress of commuting, enhances work-life balance, and boosts productivity.

2. Promoting time off

Many Sri Lankan employees are hesitant to request leave because of work pressures. HR could establish a culture that inspires employees to take their assigned vacation days guilt-free. Most banks and companies, like John Keells Holdings (JKH), have policies to ensure employees take their annual leave, hence lowering burnout and improving well-being.

3. Offering Family Care

Family is essential in Sri Lanka, hence, HR may assist staff members by developing family-friendly policies. For example, NestlΓ© Lanka provides family bonding initiatives, child care assistance, and extended paternity and maternity leave. These programs enable staff members to juggle familial responsibilities and work.

4. Programmes for Health and Wellness

Businesses in Sri Lanka offer mental health as well as physical health more attention. Wellness projects of MAS Holdings, for example, include yoga, mindfulness training, and employee assistance programs (EAPs). These help employees to improve their stress management and work-life balance.

5.  Clearly stated Job Expectations

Many Sri Lankan companies struggle with managing their employee workloads. HR can help by setting realistic goals and stated job responsibilities to avoid too much stress. For example, Dialog Axiata has a methodical performance management strategy to make sure employees are not overloaded with unrealistic objectives.

Conclusion

Happy, less worried, and more fulfilled are those who have a good work-life balance, which may increase retention and results. HR in Sri Lanka encourages work-life balance by creating beneficial rules, supporting an excellent workplace culture, and stressing employee well-being. By offering work-life balance as a priority, companies may increase staff satisfaction, keep employees for longer, and raise general productivity.

    1. Thank you for the thought-provoking question! As technology and AI continue to shape the workplace, HR’s role in promoting work-life balance will likely evolve to integrate these advancements while maintaining a focus on employee well-being. With AI streamlining administrative tasks and automating repetitive processes, HR professionals will have more time to focus on strategic initiatives like personalized well-being programs. Technology could also support flexible work arrangements, enable remote work, and provide AI-driven insights into employee engagement and stress levels. However, HR will need to ensure that technology doesn't encroach on personal time or create new pressures, emphasizing boundaries and work-life harmony. The future will likely see a balance between leveraging technology for efficiency while ensuring it enhances, rather than disrupts, employees' well-being.

For productivity, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as work output, quality of work, and employee engagement surveys can provide valuable insights. Regular feedback from employees through surveys or one-on-one meetings can help HR assess the effectiveness of initiatives.
